Ryuho Okawa, founder of Happy Science in Japan, has devoted his life to the exploration of the Truth and ways to happiness. In two books recently released in South Africa, Invincible Thinking and An Unshakable Mind he introduces two concepts new to local business leaders and aspirant entrepreneurs.
A business philosophy that encourages success
Invincible thinking as perceived by Okawa is a philosophy that allows people to succeed in any situation. It is a methodology that makes it possible to find lessons in both success and failure, thus encouraging the development of leadership.
Says Okawa: “When things are going well, people tend to be preoccupied with their own satisfaction and pleasure to the exclusion of all else; in other words, they forget to consider other people’s feelings.” Only when they themselves have experienced misfortune or adversity will they be able to understand the feelings of others.
I believe that supreme success means broadening and deepening one’s character, having a positive influence on as many people as possible, and guiding others in the right direction. It is essential to walk this path with courage.
The key, it seems further, is to discover one’s invincible self. According to Okawa we need to revolutionise our perspective and not get stuck in the past. This may sound difficult, but all this really is, is to find a new way of doing things, thinking in a way that will turn every situation to an advantage, even a failure.
Focus on the opportunity in every situation
As Okawa puts it: “It is an attitude where no matter what happens, you can always turn into an opportunity to take the next step forward.” Okawa explains that the lessons one learns by studying others as well as by understanding one’s experiences are stored in your personal “deposit”. As he puts it: “People with a rich supply of these ‘deposits’ will be successful in life.”
This concept is aligned with Okawa’s analogy of an unshakable mind being akin to an iceberg, which has a solid but mostly invisible base. An unshakable mind is acquired by remaining mentally and emotionally strong, building inner confidence and achieving spiritual growth.
Says Okawa: “I believe that supreme success means broadening and deepening one’s character, having a positive influence on as many people as possible, and guiding others in the right direction. It is essential to walk this path with courage.”

Invincible Thinking – There is no such thing as defeat
Life can be compared to the construction of a tunnel; it seems we are often obstructed by solid rock. Invincible thinking works as the powerful drill used to break through this rock.
When we practise this way of thinking, we will rise above our circumstances and no longer feel defeat in our lives – and this includes in the professional sphere.
Already having sold over 2 million copies, Okawa’s book shows how to see the world differently using varied techniques that will revolutionise your perspective and turn around your business or carry it to a new level.
