The deadline for submissions is fast approaching for the Zayed Future Energy Prize. The final day for companies across Africa to enter is July 16 2012. The Zayed Future Energy Prize, with a total prize fund of US$4-million, recognises the most innovative renewable energy and sustainability projects.
The following categories and prize funds are open for submissions:
This year’s award sees the addition of the Global High Schools Prize of US$500,000 to be divided amongst five regions (Africa, Asia, Americas, Oceania, and Europe) with each school awarded up to US$100,000. The Global High Schools category forms part of the UAE’s commitment to the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative.
High Schools are asked to submit proposals that incorporate one or more of the pillars of the initiative including:
The review and selection committees of the Prize will be evaluating entrants on the basis of four criteria: impact, innovation, long-term vision, and leadership.
Commenting on this year’s award, Dr Nawal Al Hosany said: “The Prize is a great opportunity to recognise those African companies who are at the cutting edge of renewable energy and sustainability projects. The funding awarded could provide valuable support to future cutting edge and innovative work from these organisations.”
Last year’s award attracted 425 applications from 71 countries. The Prize recognised Schneider Electric in the Large Corporations category, whilst the prize total of US$3.5-million was awarded to Professor Ashok Gadgil in the prestigious Lifetime Achievement category (US$500 000) and the Carbon Development Project (US$1.5-million) as the winner in the SME & NGO category. The first runner-up for the SME/NGO category, Orb Energy was awarded US$1-million, while the second runner-up, the Environmental Defense Fund was awarded US$500 000.
The Zayed Future Energy Prize, launched in 2008, represents the vision of the Late Founding Father and President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, who championed environmental stewardship and sustainability as an integral part of UAE history and heritage.
